Trees for Life Nursery Appeal
Let me tell you about Trees for Life
Trees for Life are based in the Scottish Highlands and they are committed to creating nature-rich landscapes there and the aim is that these landscapes support and include people. It focuses on the stunning Caledonian forest, home to the red squirrel and the lynx, and gradually, working with communities and landowners, the hope is to bring more life back.
The Caledonian forest is a vibrant ecosystem, which once covered the Scottish Highlands so Trees for Life want to restore it.
A vital part acorn of this journey, if you will, is their tree nursery. It grows tens of thousands of trees every year and many are rare and species that are hard to grow. They are very important – from these “acorns” will grow trees and forests, supporting biodiversity and many species and fighting climate change. The forest plays a key role in carbon sequestration.
Trees for Life have an urgent appeal to raise £25,000 for its nursery which will help in these ways:
- Native woodland creation, growing native Scottish tree species which will contribute to reforestation
- Enhanced biodiversity – growing a variety of rare native trees will support diverse wildlife habitats
- Local provenance trees – the responsible collection of seeds from local seed zones, to make sure the trees are diverse and well suited to the environment
- Jobs – providing both seasonal and full time job opportunities which will both support the local economy and skill development
- Training and skill sharing: Giving training and guidance to other organisations in propagating trees. This will help expand rewilding efforts and build skills and knowledge across Scotland
Work like this will have a lasting impact on the landscape of the Highlands & our planet’s health. Let's help our forests thrive so they can buzz with wildlife.
How will donations help? Trees for Life say:
- £10 could purchase seed trays to grow the next generation of trees.
- £25 could purchase gloves and equipment for volunteers working with seedlings.
- £50 could pay for compost and fertiliser for a batch of native trees.
- £200 could cover the cost of repairs to one of the small polytunnels.
Plant a tree as a gift for a nature lover. You gift will support native trees growing in the Scottish Highlands, so creating a home for wildlife - a wonderful gift. Trees for Life will send you, or the recipient of your choice, a colourful certificate personalised with your own message.
This would be a lovely thing to do in memory of someone or a nature lover who perhaps is celebrating a big birthday. You'll receive an online grove webpage where friends and family can add trees and dedications of their own.
