International Polar Bear Day

The 27th February is International Polar Bear Day! It was founded by Polar Bears International and the day coincides with the time period when polar bears mothers and cubs are snug in their dens. Polar Bears International focuses on the need to protect denning families across the Arctic.

It's vital to protect mums and cubs

The charity is raising funds to help protect mothers and cubs so that they can have the best possible chance of surviving. The cubs are born in winter dens under the snow. It's amazing to think that at birth they are blind and barely weigh a pound. They stay in the den until spring, and at that time they should be large enough to survive the Arctic weather. It's essential to keep both mums and cubs safe - only about half of the cubs reach adulthood.

Polar bears need our help

Polar Bears International research polar bears and sea ice. The information they gather can provide a scientific framework and that can inform policy and help ensure critical protections. You can find out more about their research and projects here - but how can you get involved in their work to help polar bears? What can we all do to help on International Polar Bears Day?

You can follow Polar Bears International on social media and spread their posts, news and ways to help.

  •  Watch polar bears on social media! Take a look at Parks Canada for instance!

  • Join in the virtual events before and on International Polar Bear Day

  • There’s an International Polar Bear Day Toolkit with resources you can share on social media to celebrate the bears.

  • Learn and share facts about polar bear moms, cubs, and the denning period.  The more we can all raise awareness the better, so that people are better informed.

  • Donate to support their efforts to protect moms and cubs.

  • In London, from the 27th February to 10th March, you could pop in to the Canada Goose Regent Street store!  Canada Goose (a long term partner of Polar Bears International) will be showcasing an installation, The Arctic Lab.  It’s been inspired by the architecture of the Arctic research centres and bought to life in Canada Goose’s iconic ‘PBI Blue’.  This is a great chance to discover Canada Goose’s PBI Collection – proceeds go directly to PBI and enjoy beverages and polar bear-themed treats!

  • Send an e-card to spread the word about International Polar Bears day!   They have other cards, too, such as Great Job, Thinking of you, Sending you a polar bear hug, Congratulations, Wishing you a special day, You make a difference and more!

You can also find out how conversations can help polar bears – how to get talking about climate change.  Polar Bears International have lots of help on their website so that you can speak up for those who have no voice.
