March for Clean Water
On the 3rd November 2024, there will be March for Clean Water in London. (Online, watch out for @marchforwater on social media and #FloodTheStreets and #WEARBLUE.)
Why wear blue? The idea is that the march flows as a blue wave through London, flooding the streets. Props, banners and placards will show the wide range of those marching – rowing oars, model fish, birds, otters for instance – and the march organisers are inviting people to bring a sample of the water you love to the march. In this way, the seas, rivers, streams and lakes will come straight to the doors of power in Westminster. You can see the route of the march here. And there’s a list of FAQs here.
If you can get there, muster at 11am at the Albert Embankment, London SW1 7HDF and remember, wear blue. The March starts at 11:45. And the rally begins at 1:30pm @Parliament Square, London SE1P 3BD
We must stop the poisoning of Britain’s water!
The march organisers are River Action. They are on a mission to rescue Britain’s rivers.
The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust emailed to say that Britain’s waters are in a perilous state...and I quote,
- 1,271 sewage dumps per day in England.
- Fish Deaths increased by 176% in 2023.
- 100% of England's rivers are polluted.
- 10% of freshwater species face extinction.
So it's really important that this new UK Government commits to clean up our water supply and restore our rivers and seas. The Wildlife Trusts want the UK Government to halve water pollution; fund the regulators so that they can enforce the law; and give precious, rare chalk streams the proper protection they need from development.y can enforce the law; and give precious, rare chalk streams in particular the proper protection they need from development.
The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has an appeal to help the River Derwent, at the moment. They say human actions are the main threats to wildlife along this river, and so they are and have been working to tackle river pollution, excessive tree removal and obstacles and river straightening. They are working to raise funds to help the Derwent Survival Plan, so you can join in and please help them if you can by donating. Atlantic salmon, otters and water voles are amongst the wildlife who will benefit. They need our help and support.
